About Rohingya Monitor
Rohingya Monitor is an independent investigative monitoring platform and database documenting crimes, perpetrators, abuses, and human rights violations against the Rohingya in the Rohingya refugee camps, in Arakan State of Myanmar, and beyond.
We investigate and report crimes that are underreported, overlooked, or difficult to document in the refugee camps through our direct ground team. We also value information shared by victims and witnesses and provide a way for them to share information with us without hesitation. By making perpetrators and crime incidents publicly accessible, we aim to help prevent further crimes and hold those responsible accountable.
Expose Criminals
Rohingya Monitor is also a database of crimes and perpetrators under the “Expose Criminals” dedicated mission, where the public and authorities can access information about specific crimes and the people responsible for them. This can help the public stay aware of perpetrators and their crimes, while also providing relevant information to government authorities to support accountability. Members of the media can also use the database to verify incidents or access accurate information when reporting on them.
Why Rohingya Monitor?
We have observed and found that many media outlets publish wrong or completely different information in their news articles and broadcasts about crimes and other matters happening across the refugee camps and concerning the Rohingya.
Such false representation of Rohingya concerns, along with disinformation, misinformation, and deliberately targeted information, can contribute to the dehumanization and criminalization of the Rohingya community and damage the dignity, pride, and reputation of the Rohingya people.
Rohingya Monitor was founded to help prevent the misrepresentation of Rohingya concerns and to provide accurate information about issues affecting the Rohingya community. We want the world to have access to accurate and reliable information when reporting on Rohingya issues.
Our Mission
Our main mission is to help prevent crimes from continuing or increasing when perpetrators are not properly reported or identified. We also want the Rohingya community to be aware of daily incidents, crimes, and known perpetrators so that people can take the necessary precautions and actions to protect themselves and others.
Rohingya Monitor does not focus only on incidents that have already received public attention. We monitor and investigate cases that are underreported, overlooked, or difficult to document, including crimes, abuses, and human rights violations affecting Rohingya communities. Where information can be properly documented and verified, we also work to identify perpetrators and make relevant information accessible to the public, authorities, and media.
Responsible Publication
Due to concerns under local and international law, we do not make all perpetrators’ information publicly accessible until the relevant government authorities have investigated the case and taken action or made an official decision. However, we maintain information about reported perpetrators in our internal database. We make such information publicly accessible only when the relevant authorities have taken official action or made a decision regarding the case.
Documentation and Preservation
Our work involves documenting and preserving incidents, abuses, perpetrators, and related information in a dedicated database so that important cases are not lost, forgotten, or left undocumented. Investigating sensitive cases can involve serious security and safety concerns, but Rohingya Monitor continues this work while taking those risks seriously.
It is not simply a news platform; it is focused on investigative monitoring, documentation, and building a reliable record of crimes and abuses affecting the Rohingya, including cases that may be difficult or dangerous to bring to public attention.
