MAUNGDAW, Arakan State — The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) has released video footage showing what it described as its September 24 operation against the militant Arakan Army (AA) at an AA position near Milepost 56 between Y Hlan Zone and Meezing Fara in northern Maungdaw.
The video, released through ARSA's official channels on September 29, shows its fighters engaging in fighting and shooting with AA militants before entering and taking control of an AA post in the area. The footage also shows one captured AA militant being taken into ARSA custody and giving a video statement.
The released footage further shows weapons and ammunition that ARSA said were confiscated from the AA during the operation. These include three MA-1s, two MA-2s, one AK-47, three G-3s, two RPG rounds, one 9mm pistol, 1,500 rounds of ammunition and five grenades.
According to ARSA, the operation began at around 12:30 p.m. on September 24 and continued until around 6 p.m. The group claimed that 18 AA militants were killed, one was captured alive and several others were injured and fled. ARSA also claimed that none of its fighters were injured or killed.
The September 24 operation was one of four clashes ARSA says it fought against the militant AA during September. According to its statement, the first took place on September 2 in Gorakhali Village (ဂေါ်ရာခါလီကျေးရွာ) in southern Maungdaw, followed by another on September 15 in Guta Pyin Village (ဂူတာပြင်ကျေးရွာ), Buthidaung, and a third on September 21 in Taung Bazar (တောင်ဘာဇာကျေးရွာ), Buthidaung.
ARSA said the captured AA militant remains in its custody and is being kept safely. The group also said its armed struggle is aimed at securing freedom for the Rohingya and addressing persecution faced by other ethnic communities in Arakan State.
In its release, ARSA accused both the Myanmar military and the militant AA of violence and persecution against ethnic communities in the region.
