At least four Rohingya civilians, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed when Myanmar military naval forces opened fire on a fishing boat on the Kaladan River near Sittwe on 27 October 2026.
Rohingya Monitor spoke directly with the families of the victims. The incident took place around 4 p.m. Residents from Anauk Ye IDP camp in Wirathani Township were crossing the river to fish when the boat came under attack.
The victims have been identified as Bawdiya, 48; Mohammed Solim, 30; Mohammed Yunus, 40; and Halaya, 16. All four died after being hit by gunfire and shrapnel.
According to the families, the military later took control of the boat and drove it towards Sittwe. It remains unclear what triggered the shooting or whether any warning was given before the navy opened fire.
The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of Muslim civilians, particularly internally displaced people who depend on fishing for survival.
Displaced families in the area already struggle to find enough food and maintain their livelihoods because of strict restrictions, ongoing insecurity and military operations on water and in the air. Any further restrictions or threats to fishing grounds risk deepening the food crisis and worsening the humanitarian situation for these vulnerable communities.
The ongoing clashes between the militant Arakan Army and the Myanmar military continue to seriously affect Rohingya communities. In many cases the militant Arakan Army takes positions inside or near Rohingya villages, drawing fire that endangers civilians. At the same time, the Myanmar military has also opened fire on areas where civilians live and work for their livelihoods.
Rohingya Monitor will continue to follow the case and provide further updates as more information becomes available from the families and local sources.
