Key Takeaway

For the first time, 63 Rohingya students, including 28 girls, sat for an internationally recognised primary education exam in Nayapara and Kutupalong camps on 25 October 2026. UNHCR plans to expand the exams to lower secondary level in 2027 and introduce IGCSE by 2028.

For the first time, Rohingya students in the registered refugee camps of Nayapara and Kutupalong have sat for an internationally recognised primary education examination.

According to UNHCR Bangladesh, 63 students, including 28 girls, took the formal international primary exam on 25 October 2026. The development marks a small but significant step towards recognised qualifications for Rohingya children living in the camps.

UNHCR said the exam gives Rohingya students a chance to earn certificates that are accepted beyond the camps. It also helps families see new possibilities for their children’s education.

The agency plans to expand international examinations to primary and lower secondary levels in 2027. The goal is to allow more students to continue learning and gain recognised credentials.

By 2028, UNHCR aims to introduce the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). This would open pathways for Rohingya students to pursue higher education and wider opportunities.

This development offers Rohingya children in the camps a rare chance to gain recognised qualifications. For a generation that has grown up in prolonged displacement with limited formal education options, the introduction of internationally accepted exams marks a meaningful step toward greater learning opportunities and future pathways.
